Performs advanced professional work in comprehensive planning, zoning, land use, transportation, urban design, and site planning. Work is performed under direction of the Director and Assistant Director of Planning & Development Services. The Principal Planner will oversee the work of the Planners and Assistant Planner and the day to day functions of the Planning and Zoning Division. Work tasks include:

  • Manage the Development Review process for development plan applications, including coordination with other City departments, applicants and their consultants, and preparation of reports and agenda materials for public hearings.
  • Review site plan, rezoning, plat, vacation and abandonment applications and Future Land Use Plan Amendments for concurrency with the Comprehensive Plan and compatibility with the Land Development Code.
  • Make presentations before the Community Appearance Board, Zoning Appeals Special Master, Planning & Zoning Board and City Commission.
  • Oversee the City’s Certificate of Use application processes.
  • Research and write ordinances to revise the Land Development Code and City Code.
  • Assume leadership role in planning and executing complex assignments, including management of special projects and departmental planning projects.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or a related field and at least six (6) years of experience in urban, planning and zoning, or a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or a related field with at least four (4) years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  AICP certification preferred.
